It's been two weeks since Election Day and the vote counting continues! This edition of CVF-News highlights several important developments:

  • California ballot counting status and turnout;
  • Ballot cures and rejections; and
  • Election security and transparency achievements.

Congratulations to all the election officials and staff who worked (and continue to work) long hours under extremely challenging conditions to pull off this historic election conducted during a global pandemic. Democracy only works because you do. Thanks also to the millions of voters who turned in their mail ballots early and helped inform their friends and neighbors how to vote safely this election!

New 2020 Election Song and Music Video Helps Voters Prepare to Vote in a Pandemic

New CVF Social Media Graphics Promote Voting, Help Voters
 

everybody voteCVF has been working with graphic artists to develop a new series of social media graphics designed to promote voting and help voters.

The "Everybody Vote" image series is available in a variety of sizes to be used on various social media platforms. Other CVF social media images help voters access tools and resources online and promote responsible social media message sharing.

The image gallery is available to download from CVF's web site and is featured in CVF's Nov. 2020 California Online Voter Guide.

Report finds 1.7 percent of California vote-by-mail ballots rejected on average

Young and newly registered voters had significantly higher rejection rates in three-county study

Sacramento, CA -- A new report finds on average 1.7 percent of vote-by-mail ballots cast in California have been rejected over the past decade. In three counties studied, young and newly registered voters were more likely than older voters to have their ballots rejected. 

“Improving California’s Vote-by-Mail Process by Reducing Ballot Rejection: A Three-County Study,” published by the California Voter Foundation, examines the demographics and voting methods of Sacramento, San Mateo and Santa Clara County voters whose November 2018 General Election vote-by-mail (VBM) ballots were rejected, online at: www.calvoter.org/rejectedballots.

Rejected ballots - a preview of CVF's study findings and recent news coverage

Over the past several months the California Voter Foundation has been conducting a study examining rejected vote-by-mail ballots in the November 2018 election in three California counties (Sacramento, San Mateo and Santa Clara) to learn more about the problem of ballot rejection and suggest ways to address it. This research is being conducted in collaboration with Dr. Mindy Romero, founder and director of USC's Center for Inclusive Democracy (formerly the California Civic Engagement Project).

This generous donation comes at an important time when the coronavirus pandemic is creating difficult challenges for voters and election officials alike. CVF is committed to helping voters successfully cast vote-by-mail ballots and utilize in-person voting options to maximize voter turnout and ensure Californians can safely and securely cast ballots.

Gov. Newsom issues a second Nov. 2020 election executive order; AB 860 advances to the Assembly

Hi Folks,

This edition of CVF-News provides an update on California's planning for November's 2020 Presidential election.

The basic plan that has developed is to mail everyone a ballot and give counties the option of consolidating polling places if they also provide three additional days of early voting and drop boxes. The first half of the plan - mailing everyone a ballot - was expressed in Gov. Gavin Newsom's May 8th Executive Order and would be codified by AB 860 if it is enacted into law.
